Fortunately, most problems with orthodontics are not emergencies, but rather nuisances. Things like broken wires or loose brackets need attention, but typically do not require an emergency visit to the office.
You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to solve many problems yourself (temporarily) until you can get to our office:
If your braces are poking you, put soft wax on the piece that's sticking out.
If the wire has slid to one side, you can pull it back to the other side with needle-nosed pliers, replacing it in the tube on the back tooth.
Irritated gums and other sore spots can be relieved by rinsing your mouth with a warm salt-water mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in eight ounces of warm water, and rinse your mouth vigorously. An alternative (better tasting) mouthwash is the Peroxyl rinse by Colgate. Placing Orabase on the affected area may also help relieve discomfort; Orabase and Peroxyl can be found in most drug stores. If the tenderness is severe, take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or whatever you normally take for headache or similar pain.
For a loose wire, first try to put your wire back into place using a pair of tweezers or needle-nosed pliers. If you cannot put the wire into a comfortable position, and covering the end with wax doesn't help, it is perfectly OK to use a small fingernail clipper or wire cutter to clip the wire behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. If the end of the wire is still sharp place wax on it.
The best way to avoid these annoyances with your braces is to watch what you eat and be careful with how you eat. Hard and sticky foods may break brackets and pull bands off teeth. Do not put your fingers in your mouth to play with the appliances. Biting fingernails or pens should also be avoided. And remember— always wear mouth protection when playing sports.
If your emergency involves a trauma to the mouth - please head to your closest emergency facility and contact your primary care dentist as well as our office.
In case of a true orthodontic emergency, our doctors are just a phone call away. If you cannot reach Dr. Chetlin or Dr. Pechersky at the office, please call (412) 576-4489. Please only use this number for emergencies!
